Four Myths of Affiliate Marketing -- Don’t Make these Common Mistakes

While there are many misconceptions, there are four myths of affiliate marketing that you need to learn in order to avoid making some serious blunders involving time and money when attempting to launch your online business. Here are four myth-busters to ponder.

Myth #1: You Need to Follow the Crowd

If you’re going to have any chance of success in affiliate marketing don’t think you need to do what everyone else is doing. Just because you know someone who was successful in Mary Kay Cosmetics in your neighborhood doesn’t mean you can do it too; obviously, that market was cornered early. Of the four myths of affiliate marketing, this one must be busted before you continue. The first rule is that you must target a market segment, called a niche, and one that you have some knowledge and passion for.

Myth #2: There’s Easy Money in this Business

Not true, no one gets lucky in this business, no one finds the secret or the golden rule, everyone in the affiliate marketing business has to work as hard as the next. Yes, there are 80 million people on the web out there but that doesn’t mean they’ll find you or choose to visit your site over another site. You must continually update your niche site by adding unique content that pre-sells the product you’re promoting. Of the four myths of affiliate marketing this one is trying to point out to you that inertia is always a business killer.

Myth #3: Put up the Links and They Will Come

We all wish affiliate marketing was that easy; slap a few pages of content together, load them up with links and promote lots of products, and get paid for it. Fresh content is an important aspect of this business but it’s one of the four myths of affiliate marketing to think you don’t have to do anything beyond keyword research and writing. People are looking to you for updated and accurate information in order to make a buying decision. You need to focus on your niche visitors and presell to them only; this is not a marketing plan for “just any visitor” who happens to land on your site. It’s not any harder than that. You must get to know your niche market and know how customers think and what they want.

Myth #4: You Only Need One Product to Succeed

Experienced affiliate marketers know they need “many irons in the fire,” that is, several income-producing streams in order to survive as an internet entrepreneur. That way, should one product promoting plan fail to generate measurable income, or stop producing regular income, you have other streams. But one caution: don’t promote too many products or run too many websites all at once if you can’t sell each of them effectively. The purpose of marketing is NOT to generate maximum sales volume; its purpose is to make maximum profits.

These are just four myths of affiliate marketing that you need to be aware of so that you don’t make these common mistakes. Remember: you’re selling the sizzle, not the steak. It’s the merchant who will take over and sell the product but you have to pre-sell the customer, get him ready to buy, then deliver him to the vendor/merchant.
