Novice Affiliate Marketing Secrets -- It’s All About Knowledge and Hard Work

The novice in affiliate marketing may feel overwhelmed by the learning curve that exists in this highly competitive field. Yet they are surprised to find that there is parity in this league; in fact, a novice affiliate marketer can start earning referral income on Day One.

I’ve seen it; I’ve done it myself. Not with every product of course or every ad campaign -- nobody bats .1000 in this league. But by using affiliate networks such as Clickbank or ClixGalore, and with a little planning, research, and some luck, it’s indeed possible for a novice to learn to master the challenging field of affiliate marketing and earn a regular income from it.

Begin with Adsense, but Graduate to Networks

It seems like every novice in affiliate marketing has started out at the same place; hanging Google Adsense code on their website. Web surfers are now used to seeing the familiar ads off to the side of a page and often ignore them. Even if they do click them, the ad links for many categories just don’t pay as well as they did five years ago.

(I don’t mean to knock Adsense -- I use it too, but you’d think that for an advertising system making $115 billion -- well Google should share the love with the rest of us.)

But even with entry level novice affiliate marketing there’s no advanced code to learn. Like Adsense, it’s a matter of simple “cut and paste.” You place a text link or banner on your site endorsing a product. When someone clicks on the link and makes a purchase or signs up for something at the merchant’s site, you get paid a referral commission for either the lead or sale, or both.

But instead of making $30 or $100 a month with Adsense novices will eventually need to step up to where the intermediates and affiliate marketing pros are making their money: at the network providers.

Exploring Your Options at the Affiliate Networks

You can sign up directly with large retailers such as Amazon which run in-house programs, or novice affiliate marketing partners can also sign up with networks and have the opportunity to work with a broad range of programs and merchants. A few of the most popular network providers include:

  • Commission Junction
  • AvantLink
  • Shareasale
  • Linkshare
  • ClixGalore
  • Clickbank
  • Performics

(If you’re still a bit lost at this point and aren’t ready to choose a network -- in fact, you haven’t yet made it to the “build a site” stage -- then try out this Action Guide which gives you details about how quickly you can launch a small website and start working towards earning referral income.)

Novices Advance Faster Than Ever Before

A newcomer to affiliate marketing has one advantage in this business that novices ten years ago didn’t have (when the internet was in its infancy); you can learn from those who have gone before you and not have to repeat their mistakes. Take the time to learn the basics of affiliate marketing; learn what to do and what not to do by reading through free guides such as the Affiliate Masters Course and get started the right way. The “novice affiliate marketing secret” is in knowledge of the business and in hard work, and maybe a little luck -- like making your first commission sale on Day One.
